The former president of the Clarendon Historical Society pleaded guilty to a felony after investigators said she stole more than $62,000 from the nonprofit.
State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, Orleans County District Attorney Susan Howard and New York State Police announced that Melissa M. Ierlan, 59, of Holley, will pay $62,000 in restitution.
Investigators said Ierlan served as president and financial controller of the society from 2020 to 2025 and had unchecked control over its accounts.
The Clarendon Historical Society receives town funding and operates two buildings as a museum housing local artifacts and displays.
According to DiNapoli's office, Ierlan used the society's debit card and checkbook for personal purchases and payments, withdrew cash from a bank branch and ATM, made payments to her personal credit card and deposited society donations into her personal bank account.
Investigators also said she fraudulently reimbursed herself for a fiberglass ox statue tied to the "Oxen of Orleans" Public Art Project and used society funds to buy a shipping container for personal use.
Ierlan pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny in Orleans County Court. Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 26.
