Auburn man charged after police find sawed-off shotgun, ammunition

An Auburn man was charged with two felony weapons counts after police said officers found a sawed-off shotgun and ammunition concealed at a Mann Street address.

The investigation began Tuesday after an officer with the Cayuga County Probation Department contacted the Auburn Police Department’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination unit about a person on probation who may have possessed a firearm.

Police said officers located and confronted 64-year-old Andy Alfaro Sr. as part of the investigation. Authorities then traced the case to a Mann Street property, where they reported finding a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition.

Alfaro was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C felony involving an alleged loaded firearm, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class D felony based on a previous conviction.

Police said Alfaro was processed and taken to the Cayuga County Jail for centralized arraignment. The Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office recommended that he be held without bail, according to the department.

The charges are allegations. Alfaro is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
