Cayuga County confirms two new HABs on Cayuga Lake

Two harmful algal blooms were confirmed on Cayuga Lake this week, bringing the lake's 2026 total to three confirmed HABs, according to the Cayuga County Health Department.

Health officials said residents and visitors should avoid contact with suspected or confirmed blooms, which can appear green, blue-green, yellow, brown or red and may look like streaks, dots, clumps or spilled paint.

The department said people should not swim, fish or wade in water with a suspected or confirmed bloom. Anyone who comes in contact with a bloom should rinse with clean water as soon as possible.

Officials also warned against using untreated or improperly treated private lake water for drinking, food preparation or ice. During a bloom, private water supplies drawn from the lake should not be used for bathing, showering or washing dishes, even if treatment is provided, according to the health department.

Suspected blooms can be reported to the state Department of Environmental Conservation through its online form or by emailing HABsInfo@dec.ny.gov.

People or pets who experience symptoms after exposure should contact a health care provider or veterinarian.
