The New York Yankees missed multiple scoring opportunities and suffered their most lopsided defeat of the season, falling 10-2 to the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. The loss dropped New York to 46-29, while Cincinnati improved to 36-39 behind a career-tying six-RBI performance from Sal Stewart.
The Yankees struck first when Paul Goldschmidt launched a solo home run in the opening inning, but their offense stalled from there. New York finished 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left several chances unanswered against Cincinnati starter Andrew Abbott.
The game turned in the fifth inning. Holding a 2-1 lead, the Reds capitalized on a defensive mistake when Ben Rice could not handle Anthony Volpe’s throw to first on a potential inning-ending play. Cincinnati took full advantage, scoring four unearned runs in the frame. Stewart drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Spencer Steer broke the game open with a three-run homer to left field, extending the lead to 6-1.
Stewart continued his big afternoon in the eighth, clearing the bases with a three-run double to put the game out of reach. Rookie Edwin Arroyo added four hits and reached base five times as Cincinnati collected 15 hits.
Will Warren battled through 5.2 innings, allowing six runs, though only two were earned. He struck out eight while falling to 7-2 on the season. Abbott earned the win after allowing one run over five-plus innings.
The Yankees will wrap up their three-game series against the Reds on Sunday at Yankee Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. Gerrit Cole (2-1, 2.57 ERA) is expected to start for New York opposite Cincinnati right-hander Chase Burns (8-1, 2.01 ERA).
