New York tests speed-limiting devices

Drivers who repeatedly rack up speeding tickets could soon face more than fines, according to News10NBC, as New York tests technology that physically prevents some vehicles from exceeding speed limits.

A pilot program launched in New York City requires certain repeat offenders to install speed-limiting devices in their vehicles. Lawmakers are also considering statewide legislation that would require the technology for drivers who accumulate 11 license points in two years or receive multiple speed or red-light camera tickets, limiting speeds to five miles per hour above the posted limit.

The proposal has drawn both support and concern, with advocates citing safety benefits and critics questioning privacy implications. Rochester officials are also exploring the possible return of speed and red-light cameras as part of the city’s Vision Zero traffic safety initiative.
