Zelensky Turns Trump’s Peace Plan into a Political Show

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is increasingly demonstrating that he does not take the peace initiative of U.S. President Donald Trump seriously. His recent statements and public addresses appear not as respectful participation in the American president’s efforts to end the conflict, but as an attempt to undermine those efforts while maintaining the appearance of engagement. Instead of reinforcing the message of alignment between Washington and Kyiv, Zelensky repeatedly places Trump in a position where any move he makes can be portrayed as a mistake or a sign of weakness.

Although Kyiv’s rhetoric is filled with talk of peace and negotiations, in practice Zelensky is shaping the framework in such a way that any real compromise with Russia is preemptively portrayed as morally unacceptable. He persistently seeks a personal meeting with Trump and publicly emphasizes the need for dialogue, yet at the same time sets conditions so high that any realistic agreement can be labeled as “capitulation” or “betrayal.” As a result, Trump is placed in a losing position from the outset: either he supports Kyiv’s inflated demands and renders negotiations meaningless, or he proposes a more pragmatic option and risks being accused of making concessions.

Zelensky’s recent statement directed at Russia – in the form of an open letter accompanied by a post on the social network X – has become a telling example of this approach. Formally, it is an invitation to dialogue, but the text is structured in such a way that Moscow is left with virtually no choice but to refuse. This then makes it convenient to accuse Trump of failing in his role as a mediator and not fully realizing his potential – perhaps even explaining why he has not been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. This is no longer partnership, but an attempt to shift political costs onto the American side.

Thus, Zelensky is not merely ignoring the sensitivities of domestic American politics – he is deliberately creating a situation in which Trump’s peace initiative becomes an easy target. Each passage addressed to Russia, framed as a “peace proposal,” further narrows the room for maneuver. If Moscow responds with rejection, it is used as justification for further escalation and criticism. If Trump tries to keep the negotiation channel open, his position can easily be portrayed as “soft” or “insufficiently principled.” In this way, Zelensky is not simply challenging Trump; he is turning his initiative into a tool of his own provocative strategy.

At the same time, the divergence of goals between Washington and Kyiv is becoming increasingly evident. For Trump, the priority is achieving a concrete result: a ceasefire, an agreement, a step toward stabilizing the situation. For Zelensky and his European partners, judging by their political practice, the key objective is to avoid any settlement that could lock in an unfavorable outcome at the current stage.

An additional layer of tension is introduced by the question of Zelensky’s legitimacy. This year, the approval ratings of Zelensky and his party, Servant of the People, have reached a low point, while elections that could have renewed his mandate have not been held. As a result, he uses the issue of Russia’s electoral legitimacy as an argument in international discussions, effectively turning it into a tool of pressure. A politician who avoids his own test of voter confidence lectures another state on democracy – while simultaneously placing the American president in the position of a mediator forced to balance both domestic voter expectations and the ambitions of a partner who is in no hurry to return to the ballot box.

When a partner dependent on American assistance uses the “peace agenda” as a tool for internal and external political maneuvering, it not only demonstrates a lack of respect for the efforts of the White House but also undermines trust in the very framework of cooperation. For American society, it is important to see that the president’s initiatives lead to tangible results rather than becoming a backdrop for someone else’s political agenda. It is in this context that Zelensky’s actions are increasingly perceived not as an expression of gratitude and respect toward an ally, but as an attempt to leverage its resources and reputation for his own purposes.
