NYSEG and RG&E are reminding customers that higher summer energy use can show up quickly on monthly bills, especially when air conditioners, fans and pool pumps are running more often.
The utilities said customers can use free digital tools, usage alerts and bill-assistance programs to track energy use and manage costs during the summer months.
"With more time spent at home during summer breaks and vacations, it's common to see higher energy use from air conditioners, fans, and pool pumps," said Patricia Nilsen, CEO of NYSEG and RG&E. "We want customers to know there are simple ways to stay in control of their bills – from using our free digital tools to exploring financial assistance options that can make a real difference."
Customers can enroll on the companies' websites to receive automated text or email notifications. Usage Change alerts notify customers when daily energy use is higher or lower than the past 30-day average for three days in a row. Customers can also set a monthly energy-use threshold and receive an alert if they exceed it, or get weekly updates with energy consumption details.
NYSEG and RG&E also offer Energy Manager, a free online tool that helps customers review energy use. Customers with smart meters can see hourly data, while customers without smart meters can view monthly data.
The companies said customers can reduce summer energy use by using ceiling fans, turning fans off when leaving a room, closing blinds and curtains on hot sunny days, sealing air leaks around windows and doors, and cleaning or replacing cooling-system filters. They also recommend avoiding ovens, dishwashers and dryers during the hottest parts of the day when possible.
Customers can save by adjusting thermostats, the companies said. Turning a thermostat back 7 to 10 degrees for eight hours a day from its normal setting can save as much as 10% a year on cooling, according to the release.
The utilities also pointed customers to Budget Billing, which spreads energy costs evenly over the year based on past usage, and the Enhanced Energy Affordability Program, which provides monthly bill discounts to moderate-income customers.
Customers can apply for the Enhanced Energy Affordability Program at nyeeap.com or by calling 877-400-2501.
