Carson Benge delivers clutch hits as Mets snap five-game skid

After six straight games of scoring two runs or fewer, the New York Mets finally found enough offense Wednesday night to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 at Citi Field. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for New York, which improved to 23-33 while avoiding a three-game sweep. Cincinnati dropped to 29-26.

Juan Soto continued his recent surge by giving the Mets an early lead in the first inning, launching a hanging curveball from Andrew Abbott over the right-field fence. The homer was Soto’s 11th of the season and his seventh in the last 11 days.

The Mets added to the lead throughout the night with contributions from several newcomers. Eric Wagaman homered to left field in his first at-bat with New York after being claimed off waivers from the Minnesota Twins last month. Rookie outfielder Carson Benge delivered the biggest swings of the game, driving in Brett Baty with a two-out single in the fifth inning before adding another two-out RBI single in the seventh to score Jared Young and extend the lead to 4-2.
