Drivers frustrated by rising gas prices are hearing a new pitch from Republican candidates across New York: suspend gas taxes temporarily to lower costs at the pump, according to Spectrum News.
Candidates from congressional and state Assembly races called for suspending the federal gas tax for 120 days and New York’s gas tax for 90 days. They argued families need immediate relief as fuel prices climb, though critics warned the move could hurt infrastructure funding and fail to lower prices long-term.
Gov. Kathy Hochul pushed back on the proposal, saying past gas tax suspensions mostly benefited oil companies instead of consumers. Democrats also blamed rising prices on international conflict and federal policy decisions tied to the Trump administration.
