The New York Mets suffered a significant setback Friday night when starting pitcher Clay Holmes fractured his fibula during a 5-2 loss to the New York Yankees.
Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed the injury after the game, describing it as a major blow to a Mets club that has depended heavily on Holmes throughout the season.
Holmes exited after allowing four earned runs over 4.1 innings in the series opener at Yankee Stadium. Although nothing appeared unusual during his outing, the right-hander later indicated that something felt off following his final pitch of the night. Further evaluation revealed the fracture, sidelining one of New York’s most reliable arms.
Holmes entered Friday with an impressive 2.39 ERA across nine starts and had consistently provided stability for the pitching staff.
