The New York Mets broke out offensively Tuesday night, rolling past the Detroit Tigers 10-2 at Citi Field behind a strong major league debut from A.J. Ewing and a steady outing from Freddy Peralta. New York improved to 16-25 after snapping out of its recent offensive slump, while Detroit fell to 19-23.
The Mets pressured Jack Flaherty from the outset, consistently creating traffic on the bases before chasing the right-hander after just 3.2 innings. Ewing immediately provided a spark in his debut, reaching base three times via walks while also stealing a base, ripping an RBI triple and scoring twice. His triple to right field came off the bat at 104.1 mph and showcased the speed that convinced the Mets he was ready for the big leagues.
Carson Benge stayed hot atop the lineup with two more hits, including an RBI single in the third inning, while Bo Bichette rebounded from a quiet series in Arizona by reaching base three times. Juan Soto added a pair of hits as New York took advantage of several defensive miscues by Detroit to pull away late.
Peralta battled through traffic early before settling in to deliver six innings of two-run baseball. After allowing two runs in the second inning, the right-hander retired eight straight batters and finished with seven strikeouts while holding Detroit to 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Brooks Raley escaped a jam in the seventh before Austin Warren handled the final two innings.
The Mets will look to secure the series Wednesday night at Citi Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. with Christian Scott set to face Framber Valdez.
