Mark Vientos delivered a big performance with two home runs as the New York Mets defeated the Los Angeles Angels 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Angel Stadium, securing their first road series win in nearly a month. The Mets improved to 12-22, while the Angels fell to 13-22.
Clay Holmes overcame early trouble to anchor the win. The right-hander labored through a 27-pitch first inning, allowing a run after issuing two walks, but induced a key double play to limit the damage. From there, Holmes settled in, retiring 12 of his final 15 batters and finishing with 6.2 innings of one-run ball while striking out six.
The Mets broke through in the fourth inning when Vientos launched a 427-foot, two-run homer to give New York its first lead. Despite missed opportunities in the middle innings, the offense added crucial insurance late. Carson Benge sparked the eighth with an RBI double, and Vientos capped the inning with his second two-run homer of the game.
Benge contributed across the board, reaching base three times and scoring twice while also making a pair of highlight defensive plays. The bullpen sealed the win, with Luke Weaver striking out three over 1.1 scoreless innings and Brooks Raley closing it out.
The Mets continue their road trip on Monday when they open a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. First pitch is set for 8:40 p.m., with New York yet to announce a starter.
