Auburn man charged after making repeated false emergency calls over months

An Auburn man is facing multiple charges after police say he repeatedly called in false emergencies over a period of several months, triggering responses from local first responders.

Authorities say the calls, which spanned more than half a year, prompted police, fire, and EMS to respond to incidents that ultimately proved unfounded.

The Auburn Police Department reported that Dustin Curtis, 31, was arrested April 12 following a multi-year investigation into a series of calls made to the Cayuga County Dispatch Center between June 2024 and January 2025.

Police allege Curtis made nine separate phone calls on different dates, falsely reporting emergencies that included medical incidents, fires, and gun-related complaints. Each call resulted in a response from emergency services, including combinations of EMS, fire departments, and law enforcement.

Following the investigation, Curtis was charged with eight counts of falsely reporting an incident in the third degree, a class A misdemeanor, and one count of falsely reporting an incident in the second degree, a class E felony.

Authorities said the investigation spanned multiple locations and involved coordination across emergency response agencies.

Police are asking anyone with additional information related to the case to contact the Auburn Police Department. Callers may remain anonymous.
