Your grocery bill could jump hundreds of dollars a year as New York weighs a sweeping food safety law, according to The USA Today.
The proposed measure, backed by Anna Kelles and Brian Kavanagh, would ban additives like Red 3 and potassium bromate and require new ingredient disclosures. A trade group estimates families could pay up to $620 more annually due to compliance costs and pricier alternatives.
Supporters strongly dispute that claim, arguing companies already have the data and safer substitutes exist with minimal cost impact. Kathy Hochul now holds the final decision on whether the bill becomes law.
