The Auburn Fire Department is mourning the loss of a longtime spiritual leader who spent decades supporting firefighters through some of their most difficult moments.
Fr. James Enright, who served for years as chaplain to the department, died April 29 at the age of 83, according to a statement from the department.
Fire officials said Enright was a constant presence for members, offering guidance and support at fire scenes, during emergencies and at annual memorial services honoring fallen firefighters. His role often placed him alongside crews responding to tragic incidents, where he provided prayers and comfort.
Ordained in 1969 for the Diocese of Buffalo, Enright arrived in Auburn in 1972 and went on to serve the community for more than 50 years. In addition to his work with the fire department, he served as chaplain at Auburn Correctional Facility and was involved with the Knights of Columbus.
Department members described him as more than a chaplain, calling him a trusted friend and a steady source of strength during times of hardship.
Officials said his impact extended well beyond the department, touching lives across the Auburn community over decades of ministry.
