State Police issue 66 tickets during work zone enforcement detail in Rochester

State police issued dozens of tickets during a targeted enforcement effort in a Finger Lakes-area construction zone, underscoring ongoing safety concerns for highway workers.

Troopers conducted a six-hour Operation Hard Hat detail April 20 along Interstate 590 in Rochester, working directly within an active work zone to monitor traffic and identify violations.

During the operation, police issued 66 tickets, including 45 for speeding in a work zone and six additional speed violations. Troopers also cited one driver for using a cell phone and issued 14 other vehicle and traffic tickets.

Officials said the number of violations observed in a short period highlights the risks construction crews face, even outside peak building seasons. The detail was conducted despite winter-like conditions, with crews still working along the roadway.

Operation Hard Hat places troopers inside work zones to observe driver behavior in real time, allowing for immediate enforcement of dangerous actions such as speeding or distracted driving.

State police reminded motorists that fines are doubled for most violations in work zones and urged drivers to slow down, remain alert, and avoid distractions when traveling through active construction areas.

Officials said similar enforcement efforts will continue as part of a broader push to improve safety for both workers and drivers on New York roadways.
