A stretch of quiet, dry weather across the Finger Lakes and Central New York will hold through Thursday and most of Friday, but a shift toward wetter conditions is expected heading into the weekend.
Forecasters say high pressure will keep conditions calm and seasonable through Thursday, though a weak backdoor cold front may bring slightly cooler temperatures to parts of the region.
Cloud cover is expected to increase late Thursday into Friday, with only a slight chance of scattered showers developing by Friday afternoon. The more significant change arrives Friday night, when a developing system along a stalled frontal boundary begins to bring steadier rain into the region.
Rainfall is expected to continue into Saturday, with the greatest coverage likely across areas south of the New York State Thruway — including much of the Finger Lakes and Central New York. Total rainfall amounts are projected between a half-inch and three-quarters of an inch in those areas.
Conditions improve by Sunday as the system moves out, with a return to drier weather and near-normal temperatures expected to close out the weekend.
On the lakes, including Lake Ontario, winds will increase Friday into Saturday, creating choppier conditions. Winds could approach 20 knots Saturday, with waves building up to around five feet in open waters, potentially creating hazardous conditions for small craft.
Overall, the region will see a brief return to unsettled weather before calmer conditions reestablish themselves early next week.
