The New York Mets fell to the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field, extending their losing streak to 11 games and completing a three-game sweep. New York carried a late lead into the ninth inning but could not close it out, dropping another tight game during a prolonged skid.
The Mets controlled much of the afternoon behind a strong pitching plan, holding a 1-0 advantage into the final inning. That lead came courtesy of MJ Melendez, who continued his hot stretch with a solo home run in the fifth. New York’s staff executed effectively through eight innings, combining to keep Chicago off the board and limit scoring chances.
However, the game unraveled in the ninth. Devin Williams entered looking to secure the win but allowed a leadoff hit before surrendering a game-tying double that forced extra innings. The Mets had an opportunity to respond in the tenth with runners in scoring position but failed to deliver a key hit. In the bottom half, a wild pitch moved the winning run into position before a sacrifice fly sealed the result for Chicago.
Earlier, the Mets received solid contributions from multiple pitchers, including a scoreless outing from the opener and effective middle relief that preserved the lead. Defensively, they escaped several threats, including a key double play that halted an early rally.
The Mets are off on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. when they open a home series against the Minnesota Twins.
