Yankees rally late, walk off Angels on José Caballero’s two-run double

The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels, 5-4, on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, rallying in the ninth inning to secure a walk-off victory and take two of the first three games in the series. After an early offensive surge faded, New York capitalized on a late defensive miscue and timely hitting to pull out the win.

The Yankees jumped ahead early, highlighted by Aaron Judge’s opposite-field home run in the first inning, his seventh of the season. Trent Grisham added a two-run single in the second to give New York a 3-0 lead. However, the offense stalled from there, and the Angels chipped away against Luis Gil. The right-hander allowed three home runs, including a two-run shot by Mike Trout in the fifth that gave Los Angeles a 4-3 lead. Gil went five innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out five.

New York’s bullpen kept the game within reach, combining for four scoreless innings. Tim Hill, Fernando Cruz, Brent Headrick and David Bednar each contributed, holding the Angels in check and setting up the late comeback. In the ninth, a misplayed pop-up allowed Jazz Chisholm Jr. to reach base, and he later moved into scoring position. After a walk put two on, José Caballero delivered, lining a double into left-center field that scored the tying run and brought home the winning run on a close play at the plate.

Despite finishing just 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position, the Yankees did enough late to secure the win.
