Albany budget fight drags on as tensions continue to escalate

Albany’s budget talks stalled again as deadlines slipped and leaders sparred over major policy issues, according to Spectrum News 1. Gov. Kathy Hochul and lawmakers held dueling press events Tuesday, signaling little progress nearly two weeks past the deadline.

Disputes over environmental rules and car insurance reforms continue to block negotiations. Lawmakers say Hochul won’t compromise, while she insists talks are moving forward. Her “Let them Build” plan and proposed climate law changes face pushback, especially from Democrats wary of weakening emissions goals.

Car insurance reform adds another sticking point. Supporters blame fraud and rising costs, while critics warn the plan could limit legal rights and fail to hold insurers accountable. With temp funding measures in place, a final deal still looks distant.
