A Republican candidate is warning of a lawsuit that could upend New York’s budget talks, according to Spectrum News 1. Joseph Hernandez says he’ll sue Gov. Kathy Hochul if a proposal limiting contract oversight moves forward.
The plan would raise the threshold for comptroller review from $50,000 to $300,000, potentially allowing billions in contracts to skip scrutiny. Hernandez argues that violates the state constitution and weakens financial oversight.
Thomas DiNapoli’s office also opposes the change, warning it could reduce transparency and competition in state spending. Hochul’s office hasn’t responded, as negotiations continue.
