The New York Mets wasted a dominant outing from Nolan McLean in a 7-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night at Citi Field.
McLean carried a one-run lead into the seventh after allowing just three hits across 6.0 scoreless innings. The right-hander finished with 6.1 innings, surrendering two runs with eight strikeouts and two walks, but left with two runners on base. The bullpen could not hold the lead, as Arizona erupted for four runs in the seventh to take control.
Luke Weaver was charged with the decisive damage, highlighted by an RBI double and a bases-loaded sequence that included a run-scoring error and a triple. The Diamondbacks added three more runs in the eighth to pull away.
Luis Robert Jr. accounted for the Mets’ lone run with a 412-foot solo home run in the first inning. New York’s offense struggled to build on the early lead, finishing with limited production and going hitless over the final four innings. The Mets were also held to 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez earned the win, allowing one run over 6.0 innings while limiting New York’s opportunities.
The loss dropped the Mets to 7-6, while Arizona improved to 7-6.
Next, the Mets open a three-game series with the Athletics on Friday with a 7:10 p.m. first pitch.
