State budget fight hits final stretch

With just days left before the April 1 deadline, budget talks are stalling as key disputes drag on, according to State of Politics. Gov. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers remain split over proposed changes to car insurance rules and the state’s 2019 climate law.

Lawmakers, including Deputy Senate Majority Leader Mike Gianaris, question whether Hochul’s plans will actually lower costs. Hochul argues her proposals focus on affordability and says outside groups are misrepresenting her agenda.

As negotiations inch toward overtime, policy experts point to how similar proposals have played out in other states, offering context as both sides push for a final deal.
