Court backs state’s electric building mandate

New York’s all-electric building mandate cleared a major legal hurdle Tuesday, according to Spectrum News 1.

The Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled the state law does not conflict with federal rules on gas appliance regulation. The law bars gas hookups in most new buildings under seven stories, with larger buildings covered starting Jan. 1, 2029.

Gas and construction groups sued to block the mandate, while critics warned it could raise construction costs and strain the electric grid. The state had delayed enforcement while waiting for the appeals court’s decision.
