Heat wave tests New York grid

Heavy air conditioner use could push New York’s electric demand near record levels this week, according to the Times Union.

Temperatures could approach 100 degrees between Wednesday and Friday across parts of the East Coast. The New York Independent System Operator said the grid can handle the strain after securing about 30% more electricity than it expects to need this summer.

New Yorkers can lower bills and reduce grid pressure by using large appliances during cooler hours, closing shades and raising thermostats when safe. Cornell research found bills can drop 3% to 5% for every degree thermostats go up.
