State lifts drought watch for upstate regions

State environmental officials have lifted drought watch conditions across upstate New York following improved water levels. The Department of Environmental Conservation said regions II through VIII have returned to normal status.

Long Island counties, including Nassau and Suffolk, remain under a drought watch designation.

Officials cited recent precipitation and snowmelt for improving stream flows and groundwater levels. The changes prompted the update after coordination with the State Drought Management Task Force.

New York City and Westchester County remain in normal status, with reservoir levels reported at more than 95% capacity.

Despite improvements, officials said localized dry conditions may continue. The state is urging residents to reduce unnecessary water use and address leaks.

State agencies will continue monitoring conditions and coordinating with federal and local partners.
