William Smith hockey was defeated 2-1 in overtime by Potsdam in a SUNYAC contest Friday afternoon at The Cooler.
Jessika Bullock scored the game-winning goal 2:18 into overtime, collecting a rebound in the slot and finishing the play after Potsdam controlled all four shots in the extra session. The Bears held a 37-31 edge in shots on goal for the game.
Laine Heiser provided the lone goal for the Herons, scoring on the power play at 10:08 of the second period. Heiser fired a shot through traffic from the slot for her fourth goal of the season, with assists credited to Kelly Howe and Finley Crosby. William Smith capitalized on one of its two power-play opportunities, while its penalty-kill unit successfully stopped all six Potsdam chances.
Potsdam tied the game early in the third period when Marissa Whiteside scored at the 5:17 mark, setting the stage for the overtime finish.
Junior goaltender Mia Iwicki played all 62 minutes for William Smith and recorded 35 saves in a strong effort between the pipes. Potsdam goaltender Magalie Parent also went the distance, stopping 30 shots to earn the win.
The Herons will return to action Saturday for their final home game of the regular season, hosting Plattsburgh at The Cooler. The matchup is scheduled for a 4 p.m.
