William Smith basketball dropped a Liberty League contest to Union, 70-52, Saturday afternoon at Viniar Athletic Center, as the Garnet Chargers used a dominant third quarter to pull away.
Junior Giana Lobozzo led the Herons with a game-high 16 points while adding seven rebounds and three steals. Ava Lobozzo contributed 10 points, and Miranda Martin added nine points and five rebounds. Dani Krenzer and Amelia McCulley each scored six points in the loss as William Smith fell to 3-18 overall and 1-13 in conference play.
The teams traded momentum through the first half, with William Smith holding a narrow lead after the opening quarter and taking a two-point advantage into halftime following balanced scoring and timely perimeter shooting.
Union seized control in the third quarter, shooting 53 percent from the field while limiting William Smith to just two points in the period. The surge turned a close game into a 53-32 advantage heading into the fourth quarter, providing the margin the Garnet Chargers needed to secure the win. William Smith outscored Union 20-17 in the final quarter but was unable to overcome the deficit.
Union was led by Kate Peek with 13 points, while Jelena Perovic added 11 points and Olivia Cunningham recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Garnet Chargers also held advantages in rebounding (46-40) and steals (11-4).
William Smith returns to action February 13, hosting St. Lawrence at Bristol Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
