Horseheads man indicted in death of 3-year-old

A Chemung County grand jury has indicted a Horseheads man on multiple charges in connection with the death of 3-year-old Finn Hopkins.

Christopher M. Woods, 27, was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and second-degree assault.

Prosecutors say Woods repeatedly beat the child on Sept. 15, causing blunt force trauma to the brain. According to the indictment, he then failed to seek medical attention in time — a delay that led to the child’s death.

That same day, Woods brought Hopkins to Arnot Ogden Medical Center after finding him unresponsive. Despite emergency efforts, the child was pronounced dead.

Medical staff noticed injuries on both Hopkins and a younger sibling and contacted Chemung County Child Protective Services. Investigators later determined that Woods was responsible.
