Eight schools in Chemung and Steuben counties will get new food pantries thanks to a $185,000 donation from Corning Inc., according to the Elmira Star-Gazette.
Each school will receive $22,500 to run a school food center, with additional funds for project support. The goal: provide free, nutritious groceries to students and families in a region where child food insecurity rates are more than 25% above the national average.
The program also gives older students leadership experience while helping reduce stigma around food access.
