New Yorkers looking for affordable housing now have a new tool to speed up the process — and even apply online.
The state’s Homes and Community Renewal agency (HCR) just launched an improved version of its housing search website, HousingSearch.ny.gov, aimed at making it easier to find open listings and enter housing lotteries across the state.
One site, statewide access
The revamped site consolidates listings for all HCR-financed housing into one place. Users can browse open lotteries and waitlists, check eligibility based on income or household size, and apply directly online.
“This is about removing barriers,” said HCR Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas. “The new website reflects our commitment to making affordable housing easier to find and access.”
Listings are available for a range of residents — including families, seniors, veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and those needing supportive services.
Accessibility and language options
The site includes filters for accessible apartments equipped for people with mobility, hearing, or visual impairments. It also features translation support for the 12 most commonly spoken languages in New York State.
For landlords, the platform offers tools to post listings, run lotteries, manage waitlists, and accept applications electronically.
Part of a bigger housing push
The website update supports Governor Hochul’s broader housing goals, which include:
- A $25 billion, five-year housing plan
- Creating or preserving 100,000 affordable homes statewide (with over 65,000 already done)
- More than $1.5 billion in new funding in the FY26 budget
- Expanded tax incentives and new protections for renters and homeowners
