New York gas prices among nation’s highest before July 4

New York remained one of the nation's most expensive gasoline markets heading into the July Fourth weekend, even as drivers nationwide saw some relief at the pump, according to AAA.

AAA reported July 2 that New York's average price for regular gasoline was $4.08 per gallon, tying Washington, D.C., and Illinois among the 10 most expensive markets in the country.

The national average was $3.838 per gallon, down from $3.918 one week earlier and $4.290 one month earlier. AAA said prices have fallen nearly 50 cents from a month ago after crude oil prices dropped to their lowest levels in months.

The national average remained higher than one year earlier, when regular gasoline averaged $3.172 per gallon. AAA said gas prices are still the highest they have been in four years, despite the downward trend since late May.

Hawaii had the highest average price at $5.48 per gallon, followed by California at $5.40, Washington at $5.09, Alaska at $4.79 and Oregon at $4.62.

The least expensive markets included Indiana at $3.12, Texas at $3.34, Oklahoma at $3.37 and Tennessee at $3.41.

AAA cited Energy Information Administration data showing gasoline demand increased from 8.77 million barrels per day to 9.13 million, while domestic gasoline supply dropped from 216.3 million barrels to 214 million. Gasoline production averaged 10 million barrels per day.

For electric vehicle drivers, AAA said the national average at public charging stations remained unchanged at 41 cents per kilowatt hour.
