State Street launches summer series for families downtown

Auburn families are invited to enjoy art, music, and wellness in the heart of downtown as the new State Street Pulse series kicks off on July 16. Running every Wednesday evening through August 27, the free community event features interactive activities designed to engage children and parents alike.

Jesse Kline, executive director of the Auburn Downtown BID, said the series “is aimed to benefit young families. Exposing our youth to art making, student musical performances, yoga practice and massage can only benefit their wellbeing and spark creative energy and connection in our community.”

Held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the State Street Event Plaza, the series will rotate performers and artists each week. Opening night will feature local group Nuclear Ukulele with musicians Bob Lyna, Dan Cleveland, Ron Van Nostrand, and Don Meixner. Attendees can also learn tie-dye techniques with Kat Walsh of What Comes Around Apparel. Cellar & Folly Whiskey Co. will mark the release of its Auburn Reserve Blended Whiskey with a musical set by Caleb Liber at A.T. Walley’s back patio.

On July 23, visual artists take the spotlight as Dawn Jordan leads a community project to build a black crow sculpture from recycled materials. Kevin Burke will offer a mural-painting experience on vinyl.

The July 30 event includes acoustic performances by Flock of Free Range Children, followed by a drum circle. Visitors can also participate in The Postcard Project with Teresa Hoercher, who invites guests to handwrite notes that she will personally mail.

August 6 will focus on relaxation, with yoga sessions by Linda Galbato and June Green of Pure Moon Yoga and chair massages from Ricky Rainone, who will also guide a drum circle.

Artist Sandy Shutter headlines August 13 with a hands-on art workshop titled “Fairy Doors, Portals to Magical Lands.” Walsh returns that evening with her tie-dye garment station.

The August 20 event brings a musical variety show with Jim Van Arsdale and Perform 4 Purpose, playing hits across several decades.

For the final night on August 27, Way of Guitar students led by Jeff Wiggins will perform. Hoercher will again be on site with The Postcard Project.

Throughout the series, families can also enjoy ongoing features by AuburnRox and caricature artist Walt Schoonmaker.

The program is organized by the City of Auburn Parks & Recreation Department in partnership with the Auburn Downtown BID. “Come out to enjoy grassroots programming to expose young families to the benefits of music, art and wellness,” organizers said.
