Deputy injured in crash outside Wayne Co. Sheriff’s Office; driver ticketed for reckless driving

A Wayne County Deputy was injured Friday morning in a two-car crash outside the Sheriff’s Office on State Route 31.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, 23-year-old Hunter S. Boyer of Lyons was driving westbound on the shoulder of the eastbound lane after pulling out of the jail parking lot around 11:48 a.m. At the time, eastbound traffic was stopped due to nearby road construction.

Deputy Sheriff Dennie, who also works as a Corrections Officer, was traveling westbound in the designated open lane through the work zone. As Deputy Dennie attempted to turn left into the Sheriff’s Office driveway, Boyer’s vehicle left the shoulder and struck the patrol vehicle near the driver’s side door.

EMS crews responded and evaluated everyone involved at the scene. Ambulance personnel transported Deputy Dennie to Newark-Wayne Hospital for further evaluation of a possible head injury.

Deputies issued Boyer seven traffic tickets, including one for reckless driving. He is scheduled to appear in Lyons Town Court on August 5 at 8:30 a.m.

The Lyons Fire Department and Wayne County EMS assisted at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
