An Ithaca man was arrested late June 12 after police discovered a loaded handgun and cocaine during a joint patrol detail targeting gun violence.
The driver, identified as 29-year-old Edrick Acosta-Ramos, was pulled over around 11 p.m. on West Clinton Street near South Plain Street after officers observed a traffic violation. The stop was conducted by an Ithaca Police officer and a New York State Trooper as part of the Gun Involved Violence Enforcement (GIVE) initiative.
During a roadside interview, a K9 unit alerted to the vehicle. A search revealed a loaded 9mm handgun equipped with a high-capacity magazine containing over 20 bullets, as well as a small amount of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
Police charged Acosta-Ramos with four offenses: Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree (Class C felony), Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree (Class D felony), Tampering with Physical Evidence (Class E felony), and Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the 2nd Degree (Class A misdemeanor).
Following arraignment before Judge Peacock in Ithaca City Court, Acosta-Ramos was remanded to the Tompkins County Jail on $100,000 bail or bond.
