David Peterson was dominant on Wednesday night, tossing a complete-game shutout to lead the New York Mets (44-24) past the Washington Nationals (30-37), 5-0, at Citi Field.
Peterson faced little trouble throughout the night, retiring the side in order over the first three innings on just 32 pitches. He allowed six hits over nine scoreless frames, struck out six, and got stronger late, escaping a seventh-inning jam and preserving the shutout with a crucial defensive play in the eighth. It was the Mets’ first complete-game shutout by a lefty since Steven Matz in 2019, and the first complete game of the season by any Mets pitcher.
The offense gave Peterson plenty of support early. Pete Alonso put the Mets on the board in the first with a two-out RBI double to center, his league-leading 63rd RBI. Juan Soto added a two-run homer in the third, a 408-foot shot that extended his on-base streak to 13 games. Brandon Nimmo joined the power surge with solo homers in the fifth and seventh, giving him his second multi-homer game of the season, both coming against Washington.
The Mets go for the series sweep of the Nationals on Thursday at 1:10 p.m. with Kodai Senga set to take the ball against Mike Soroka.
