A long-overdue increase to New York’s short-term disability payments is facing last-minute resistance in the Assembly, according to Spectrum News. The bill would raise the benefit cap—unchanged since 1989—from $170 to roughly $1,170 a week. While state senators approved the plan in March, Assembly leaders are hesitant, citing concerns from business groups.
The proposal splits premium costs between employers and workers and phases in changes over several years. Critics argue the hike could raise employer premiums by up to 600%, while supporters call it a fair compromise aligned with other states.
With the legislative session ending June 17, time is running out. Advocates hope Assembly leaders and Governor Hochul can reach a deal before the deadline.
