Court upholds conviction in Cayuga County officer assault case

New York’s highest court has upheld the conviction of a man found guilty of assaulting a police officer in Cayuga County.

The Court of Appeals affirmed the conviction of Luke Gaffney, ending his direct appeal in the case.

A Cayuga County jury convicted Gaffney on March 20, 2023 of aggravated assault upon a police officer.

He was sentenced June 12, 2023 to 15 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.

The conviction stems from an October 23, 2020 incident at a Town of Aurelius residence, where authorities said Gaffney stabbed a Cayuga County sheriff’s deputy multiple times.

The deputy was treated at Upstate Hospital for several wounds, including one that nearly struck a vital artery.

The Appellate Division previously upheld the conviction on November 15, 2024 before the case was reviewed by the Court of Appeals.
