Trail guide promotes lesser-known Finger Lakes sites

The Finger Lakes Regional Tourism Council has launched a new trail guide highlighting lesser-known outdoor destinations across the region.

The guide aims to spread visitor traffic beyond heavily used parks and support tourism across all 14 counties.

The initiative, titled “Less Traveled. More Enchanting.,” includes detailed descriptions of trails with features such as waterfalls, wildlife viewing and family-friendly activities, along with accessibility information.

Featured locations include Carpenter Falls, Bear Swamp State Forest, Syracuse’s Creek Walk and Huckleberry Swamp.

The council said the effort is designed to reduce environmental pressure on crowded sites while encouraging exploration of less-visited areas.

The guide also promotes Leave No Trace principles, which have been adopted across all 14 counties.

“Both the new website and the Trail Guide present inspiring depictions of the Finger Lakes’ outdoor assets,” said Nigar Hale, Chair of the FLRTC Board. “We are excited about the potential to not only enhance visitor experiences, but also create lasting benefits for communities across our region.”

The council printed 70,000 brochures for distribution at visitor centers, welcome centers and state parks throughout the region.

The initiative also aims to direct visitors to communities that see less tourism activity, with the expectation that increased visitation will support local businesses.
