Authorities in Seneca County are alerting residents to a scam involving individuals posing as NYSEG employees in an attempt to enter homes under false pretenses.
Recent reports indicate that people claiming to work for the energy provider have been knocking on doors and offering to save homeowners money on their utility bills. However, NYSEG has confirmed that it has no employees conducting energy evaluations in the area.
Officials are urging the public to remain cautious and verify employment before engaging with anyone requesting personal information. NYSEG representatives emphasize that all employees must carry and present company identification upon request.
Residents are advised not to share personal details with solicitors. This includes information about household members, daily schedules, security systems, and automated lighting.
Under no circumstances should unknown individuals be allowed into a residence without confirmed identification. Anyone encountering this scam is urged to call 911 immediately so law enforcement can respond.
