Ithaca’s school budget draws little public pushback

A proposed $169 million school budget in Ithaca has sparked little controversy ahead of the May 20 vote, according to the Ithaca Voice.

Unlike last year’s contentious hearings, only one person spoke at Tuesday’s public session. The 3.69% spending increase is seen as modest, with district leaders calling it a “rollover” budget that maintains current programs. Lower property tax hikes and a freeze on most property assessments helped reduce public opposition.

The budget funds operating costs like salaries and supplies, with special education making up 15% of total spending. Voters will also decide on four school board seats and a proposal to replace buses. Property taxes remain the district’s largest revenue source.
