Columbia lays off 180 after Trump pulls funding

Columbia University will lay off nearly 180 employees after President Donald Trump canceled $400 million in federal grants, according to the Associated Press. The funding cut followed criticism of the school’s handling of Gaza war protests, with layoffs impacting research from antiviral treatments to maternal health studies.

About 20% of grant-supported staff received termination notices, and research projects are being scaled back or halted. Although university officials are negotiating with the Trump administration to restore funding, faculty say the damage will take years to repair.

The funding loss stems from accusations of tolerating antisemitism, prompting Columbia to overhaul protest policies and academic programs to meet federal demands. Whether the cuts will be reversed remains uncertain.
