Lansing Town Board pushes back on Trump policies

The Lansing Town Board passed two resolutions opposing parts of former President Donald Trump’s agenda, according to the Tompkins Weekly. One resolution criticized immigration policies that allegedly violated constitutional rights, particularly the deportation of activists without due process.

Board members cited cases like that of Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Palestinian student detained without charges, and condemned ICE’s actions under Trump. They also opposed Trump’s proposal to tax municipal bonds, warning it would burden local taxpayers with higher costs for public projects.

The immigration resolution passed with one abstention, while the bond protection measure was approved unanimously. Town leaders urged state and federal officials to uphold constitutional protections and safeguard critical funding tools.
