Downed power line sparked brush fire in Catlin, one firefighter treated for heat exhaustion

A brush fire that scorched up to eight acres in the Town of Catlin earlier this week was caused by a downed power line, fire officials confirmed Tuesday.

The fire broke out Monday afternoon near Buck Mountain Road, just off Johnson Hollow Road. Crews from multiple departments across Chemung and Schuyler counties responded to the scene. Millport Fire Chief John May said a firefighter suffered heat exhaustion while battling the blaze.

Roughly 90 firefighters were involved in containing the fire. By 7 p.m., crews had 95% of the blaze under control. New York State Forest Rangers later determined the fire burned between 5 and 8 acres.
