Traveler spending in Cayuga County surged in the past year, providing a critical boost to the local economy. According to recent data, tourism spending grew by more than 8%, rising from $144 million in 2022 to $157 million in 2023. This increase in revenue has had a widespread impact, supporting local businesses, creating jobs, and enhancing public services through boosted tax revenue.

Employment in the county’s tourism sector also saw a notable increase, with job numbers climbing from 1,480 to 1,541 over the year. In addition, traveler spending generated over $9 million in state taxes and another $9 million in local taxes. These tax revenues are crucial for funding essential services such as education, healthcare, and various community projects.
Cayuga County residents have directly benefited from the influx of tourism dollars. Without the taxes generated by visitor spending, each household would need to pay an additional $604 to maintain the current level of government services, making tourism a key contributor to keeping local taxes manageable.
Karen Kühl, executive director of the Cayuga County Tourism Office, credited the growth to targeted marketing efforts and community engagement. “We’re excited to continue our public relations and outreach plans to sustain this momentum and bring more tangible benefits to the residents of Cayuga County,” Kühl said.
The tourism office has used geographic, demographic, and social data to inform its marketing strategies, ensuring that efforts are focused where they will yield the greatest returns. These strategies have been pivotal in driving the increased visitor numbers and spending.
Continued investment in tourism is expected to promote further growth and resilience in the county’s economy, creating a diverse economic landscape that can withstand fluctuations in other industries. Local officials hope the positive trend will continue in the coming years, with tourism providing not just immediate economic benefits but also laying the foundation for long-term stability.
