New York Mobile ID reaches 100,000 users, streamlining airport security

Governor Kathy Hochul announced today that over 100,000 New Yorkers have enrolled in the New York Mobile ID program, a secure digital version of state-issued IDs that enhances convenience and security for users, particularly at airport security checkpoints.

The New York Mobile ID (MiD), launched in June, allows users to carry a digital version of their driver license, learner permit, or non-driver ID on their smartphones. Available on both iOS and Android devices, this voluntary digital ID has quickly gained popularity for its ease of use and enhanced security. “We are excited that so many New Yorkers have downloaded the Mobile ID app,” Governor Hochul said, emphasizing the tool’s role in making travel smoother and more secure.

The MiD is accepted at nearly 30 TSA security checkpoints nationwide, including all terminals at LaGuardia and JFK airports, allowing New Yorkers to verify their identity quickly and securely. The state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is also working to expand acceptance of the MiD in various sectors, including auto dealerships, bars, restaurants, and financial institutions.

Designed with privacy in mind, the New York Mobile ID complies with stringent international standards for personal identification. Users can unlock the app with Face ID, TouchID, or a secure PIN, ensuring that personal information is encrypted and only shared with the user’s consent. As the DMV continues to work on expanding the app’s usage, New Yorkers are encouraged to download and register their MiD through the App Store or Google Play to take advantage of this convenient and secure digital ID solution.
