South Bristol officials are moving ahead with a revitalization project at the South Bristol Scenic Overlook along County Road 12, including parking lot improvements, site cleanup, flower beds and new educational signage.
The town said the project is being led by the South Bristol Parks and Recreation Committee with support from local conservation partners and the Finger Lakes Connection.
The overlook is known for views of Canandaigua Lake, Bare Hill and surrounding hills. Town officials said the project is intended to improve safety, beautify the site and strengthen public education about the local watershed.
Planned improvements include regrading and repaving the public parking areas, fresh volunteer-planted flower beds, mowing and weeding, cleanup of pavers and curbside areas, and installation of educational interactive signage through the Virtual Museum of the Finger Lakes Connection.
Town officials said volunteer flower beds and site preparation have already been completed. The highway department is expected to move into parking lot regrading and repaving during the last two weeks of July 2026.
The project is spearheaded by the Parks and Recreation Committee, led by Councilperson Chris Abraham, with committee co-chairs Jeff Liebentritt and Beth Fitch and volunteer Matthew Spear. Highway Superintendent Jim Wight oversaw mowing and weeding preparation, while Liebentritt led cleanup work at the pavers and curbside.
The town also credited Gannett Hill Gardens and Joseph's Wayside for contributions that supported the seasonal flower installations.
"Our parks and outdoor spaces are vital to the health, well-being, and identity of the South Bristol community," Abraham said. "By enhancing the Scenic Overlook, we are ensuring a safe, beautiful, and world-class space to connect with nature and experience the spectacular landscape of the Finger Lakes."
Town Supervisor Lisa Moore said preserving scenic vistas is a foundational goal for South Bristol and said the work reinforces the town's commitment to environmental stewardship in the watershed.
