Teen scooter rider seriously injured in Canandaigua crash

A 14-year-old Canandaigua boy was seriously injured Monday afternoon when the electric scooter he was riding was struck by a car on Johnson Road in the town of Canandaigua.

Deputies said the crash happened around 3 p.m. June 30 as the teen was riding westbound on the public highway and attempted to cross traffic to turn into a driveway.

According to the release, the scooter rider failed to yield the right of way to a 2020 Chevy four-door sedan driven by Donna Fox, 66, of Prattsburg, who was also traveling west on Johnson Road.

Deputies said Fox attempted to stop and moved into the oncoming lane to avoid hitting the scooter and rider. The passenger-side mirror of the sedan struck the rider and scooter as the scooter was crossing the lanes of traffic.

The teen was ejected and suffered head trauma. Deputies said his injuries were serious but not life-threatening.

He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital by Canandaigua Ambulance. Deputies said the scooter rider was not wearing a helmet.

Fox was not injured. Deputies said no traffic tickets were issued because the juvenile was at fault.

Canandaigua Ambulance, Cheshire Fire Department and Mercy Flight responded to the scene. The crash was investigated by Sgt. Francher and deputies Herlehy, McCauley and Smith.
