Boar’s Head is recalling an additional 7 million pounds of deli meats from a Virginia plant due to a deadly listeria outbreak, U.S. Agriculture Department officials announced Tuesday. This follows an earlier recall of over 200,000 pounds.
The expanded recall includes 71 products made between May 10 and July 29, under Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names. These items, which include liverwurst, ham, beef salami, and bologna, were distributed nationwide and to several international locations.
The outbreak has resulted in two deaths and nearly three dozen illnesses across 13 states, with most cases requiring hospitalization. The issue was identified after a liverwurst sample in Maryland tested positive for listeria.
Boar’s Head has halted production at the Jarratt, Virginia plant and advised consumers to discard or return the affected products. Listeria poses significant risks, especially to older adults, those with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.
