New York begins transition to online standardized testing for elementary and middle schools

New York state is initiating a shift from traditional paper-and-pencil standardized tests to online exams for students in grades three through eight.

The transition, beginning this April with fifth and eighth graders, aims to have all relevant spring English language arts, math, and science exams online by the 2026 school year.

According to officials, most districts are expected to digitize state testing without issue, thanks in part to substantial recent funding for internet connectivity in the state.

While the online program is anticipated to save costs on printing and shipping materials, officials say the focus of the transition is about providing children with better tools for success long-term.
